STUART - Jon
Williams of Miami defended his Overall title as he won the 5th
annual Halpatiokee 5K Run held Saturday morning at Halpatiokee Regional Park
as he covered the loop course in 17 minutes, 42 seconds. Palm City’s Dale
Ruby finished second in 18:49, and Robert Barber of Port St. Lucie was third
in 19:03. Ruby, 44, won the Masters (age 40 and over) title for his
efforts.
Williams’ effort was his best finish in three attempts. He won
last year’s event in 18:01 and finished second to course record-holder Ryan
Kelly (16:52) in 2004 with a time of 17:49.
In the women’s race, Brenda Wilson of Stuart won the Overall
title in 19:52, Jill Bradford of Port St. Lucie was second in 22:30, and
Stuart’s Michelle Heath finished third in 25:03 despite a last-place start.
Heath was making her way to the starting line went the race began, and she
was forced to play catch-up throughout the run.
Lynn Whalen, 48, of Stuart won the Masters title in 25:14.
A total of 94 runners completed the event, which was organized
by the Martin County Parks and Recreation Department and hosted by the
Sailfish Striders Running Club of Stuart.
