HOBE
SOUND - Ashley Brasovan of
Wellington showed her range of running ability as she won the 13th
annual Del Hagin 15K Run held Sunday morning at the Jones/Hungryland
State Preserve and smashed the course record in the process. Brasovan,
17, covered the 9.32-mile out-and-back trail course in 55 minutes, one
second, the fastest time for any runner – male or female – on the course
in the three years the race has been held at Hungryland. Brasovan’s
time was 48 seconds faster than John Reback’s course record set at last
year’s race. Just five runners have broken an hour on this course, and
no woman had done so until Brasovan’s run.
Brasovan won her third consecutive state cross country title
last November and then went on to win the Foot Locker National Cross
Country Championship a month later, making her the top female high
school cross country runner in the nation.
Kara Weber-Fleming of Palm Beach Gardens finished second in
the women’s race in 1:07:48, and Jensen Beach’s Cynthia Washam was third
in 1:09:43. Washam, 50, won the Masters (age 40 and over) title for her
efforts.
In the men’s race, Jon Williams of Miami won the Overall
title in 57:51, Stuart’s Adam Blythe finished second in 58:17, and
Anthony Lee of Port St. Lucie was third in 1:01:13. Dale Ruby, 45, of
Palm City finished sixth in 1:02:06 to win the Masters title.
Williams and Blythe both broke an hour in last year’s race,
Williams finishing second in 56:12 and Blythe fourth in 59:07.
A total of 89 runners, the largest field to run at
Hungryland, completed the event, which was organized by the Martin
County Parks and Recreation Department and hosted by the Sailfish
Striders Running Club of Stuart.
