JENSEN BEACH - John Reback and Jamie Spooner became the first repeat

champions in the eight-year history of the Fleet Feet Martin County Half-Marathon to

win twice in the same calendar year. Reback, 38, of Jupiter covered the 13.1-mile new

loop course in one hour, 19 minutes, 23 seconds Sunday morning, a bit more than a

minute faster than his 1:20:54 time recorded in the seventh annual race held last January.

Okeechobee’s Lance Sluder finished second in 1:22:58, outleaning Miami’s Jon Williams

at the tape by a mere half-second. Mike Kodya, 54, of Port St. Lucie finished fourth in

1:24:25 to win the Masters (age 40 and over) title.

In the women’s race, Spooner cut nine minutes four seconds off her previous

winning time as she took the Overall title in 1:30:42. Stephanie Stevens of Delray Beach

was second in 1:32:51, and West Palm Beach’s Amy Triggs finished third in 1:36:09 to

win the Masters title.

The Half Marathon was relocated both in space and in time, as the first seven

events were held in the month of January and in the town of Hobe Sound, and the race

routinely drew about a hundred runners. The Sailfish Striders Running Club of Stuart,

hosts of the event along with the Martin County Parks and Recreation Department,

suggested that the event be moved to October and that the course be moved closer to the

water, and the results of those moves produced a record crowd of 256 finishers. Several

new sponsors, led by the Fleet Feet Stuart running store, also joined in the race’s

makeover and greatly increased the event’s visibility in the running community.

The new course began and ended at the Jensen Beach Public Beach parking lot,

and took runners over both the Jensen Beach and Stuart Causeway bridges as well as

through the town of Sewall’s Point and along Indian River Drive in Jensen Beach and

Highway A-1-A on Hutchinson Island. The race’s redesign produced two races within

the same year, as the last event was held ten months ago, thus leading to Reback’s and

Spooner’s unusual twice-in-a-year dual victories.
