Conch Pride 5K, August 21, 2010
The annual Conch Pride 5K was run this Saturday, August 21, 2010.
The weather was hot and steamy, with little wind at the start of the race.
This did not stop 90 plus runners who ran and walked the course. It was also a tune-up
for the KWHS cross country team. The race had great sponsors, lots of raffle prizes,
and hard working volunteers. This type of support is what a race is all about and the
Key West Southernmost Running Club extends its gratitude.
The overall male winner was Jon Williams of Miami, Florida with a time of 17:56.
Woman’s winner was Abigail White with a time of 22:35. Masters winners were Juan Mayancela
from the Sugarloaf Key, and Tineke Rubio, of Miami. In fact, the Rubio family Felipe,
Humberto, Jr. and Humberto, Sr.) also took home first place finishes in three of the male
age group running catagories. Not to be out done, the Welzien sisters (Jane, Priscilla
and Julie) from the Sugarloaf Key, also claimed three first place age group finishes.
Our youngest finisher was Nicole Matysik (9) with a time of 28:54, and most mature runner
was a regular Southernmost runner, Terry Doughtry (76) with a time of 37:03.
And for our walkers, Cory Walters lead the female walkers with a time of 32:24.
For the men, Ron Cooke had a time of 39:17. Ron’s wife, Sue, also took the podium
with a third place walkers finish.
The race also awarded the KWHS alumni and current students.
The Top Alumni Male was Brian Veliz (1988 grad) and the female was Natalia Duke (2000 grad).
For the top students, it was Aeschton Tomita and Priscilla Welzien.
