JENSEN
BEACH - John Reback made sure he
wouldn’t fall victim to Rob Barber’s finishing kick in Friday evening’s
eighth annual Beach To Beach 5K Run, as Reback pulled away early to win the
3.1-mile point-to-point race in 16 minutes, 46 seconds. Barber, 23, of
Oviedo was second in 17:06, and Stuart’s Adam Blythe finished third in
17:24.
In last month’s Downtown Dash 5K, the second of the three-race
Summer Sizzler Race Series organized by the Martin County Parks and
Recreation Department and hosted by the Sailfish Striders Running Club of
Stuart, Barber and Reback were running even with a hundred yards to go and
Barber’s strong finishing kick gave him a four-second victory over North
Palm Beach’s Reback, 17:20 to 17:24. In Friday’s Series finale, Reback
powered away early enough to neutralize Barber’s kick.
Dale Ruby, 45, of Palm City finished eighth overall to win the
Masters (age 40 and over) title in 18:40.
In the women’s race, Stuart’s Brenda Wilson, 50, won the Overall
title in 19:57, Cynthia Washam of Jensen Beach was second in 21:21, and Port
St. Lucie’s Jill Bradford finished third in 21:29. Washam, 50, won the
Masters title for her efforts.
Craig Stokes of Stuart was the lone disabled entrant, winning
the Hand-Bike category in 13:44.
A record crowd of 315 runners completed the event.
