STUART - When Jon Williams of
Miami finished the South Fork Cross Country 5K Run Friday
night at South Fork High
School , he
knew no one had passed him since he had taken the lead just past the halfway
point of the race, yet he was fourth across the line. A conference among the top five
finishers of the race revealed that three competitors took a wrong turn which
cut about 400 yards off the course, yet the three people who crossed in front of
Williams would have finished in the same order behind him if they had run the
correct route. Williams was
declared the winner with a time of 19:09 ,
Vero
Beach ’s Kevin
Brennan was second in a corrected time of
19:36 , Bob Haviland of Jensen Beach finished third in a corrected time of
19:47
, and Ed Bates of
Fort
Pierce won the
Masters (age 40 and over) title in a corrected time of
19:53
.
Brennan, Haviland, and Bates had one minute, 25 seconds
added to their actual finishing times in order to correct for the distance they
missed based on the speed they were running in the race.
In the
women’s race, Emily Houston of Jensen Beach won the Overall title in
21:12 , Indialantic’s Stephanie Trout finished
second in
22:51 , and Cynthia Washam of
Jensen Beach was third in 23:23. Washam, 47, won the Masters title for
her efforts.
A record field of 146 runners
and four walkers completed the difficult grass-and-trail course. The race was the first race in the
Summer Sizzler Race Series sponsored by the
Martin County Parks and Recreation Department and hosted by the Sailfish
Striders Running Club of Stuart.
The next race in the Series will be the Downtown Dash 5K in Stuart at
7:00
p.m. on Friday, July
