STUART - Jon Williams of
Miami made the drive up to Stuart worthwhile as he took home
the trophy for Overall winner in the fourth annual Halpatiokee 5K Run/Walk held
Saturday morning at Halpatiokee Regional Park . Williams,
36, covered the 3.1-mile looping course in 18 minutes, one second, followed by
Fort
Pierce ’s
Mike Dahan in second place in a time of
18:45
.
Thomas Matese of Jupiter finished third in
19:09 . Dahan,
50, won the Masters (age 40 and over) title for his efforts.
In the
women’s race, Tracey Lynn Bunce of Wellington won the Overall title in
21:27 , Cynthia Washam of
Jensen Beach finished second in 21:49 , and Fort Pierce ’s Kathleen Kiper was third in 21:56. Washam, 48, won the Masters title.
A total
of 90 runners completed the event, which was sponsored by the
Martin County Parks and Recreation Department and hosted by the Sailfish
Striders Running Club of Stuart.
More than 200 running t-shirts and 45 pairs of running shoes were donated
towards Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, earning many runners a discount on the
entry fee into the race.
The shoes and shirts were taken
to the Fleet Feet running store in Jensen Beach , where they will be shipped to the Fleet Feet running
store in Jackson , Mississippi and distributed to needy families in
Mississippi and Alabama .
