FORT
PIERCE - Joey Faitella of
Palm City broke away from a small pack of runners in the second mile and
went on to win the inaugural Race For The Crown 5K Run/Walk held Saturday
morning at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds. Faitella, 18, covered
the 3.1-mile two-loop course in 17 minutes, 28 seconds, followed by
Miami’s Jon Williams in 17:38 and David Lee Rhodes of Greenacres in
17:58.
In the
women’s race, Sandra Shoemaker of Port St. Lucie led from start to
finish to win the Overall title in

Omey
,
Virginia
finished
second in 23:13
, and Loxahatchee’s Toni Medvetz was third
in 23:50.
A total
of 71 runners and 17 walkers completed the event, which was held in
conjunction with the Chili Cookoff competition. All proceeds from
the race went to the Fort Pierce Exchange Club’s CASTLE’s programs to
prevent child abuse.
