Run for the Coach 5K: Kelly, Lapointe take top honors

FORT PIERCE — Ryan Kelly of Vero Beach won the second annual Run For The Coach 5K Run/Walk Saturday morning at the Community Center as he covered the 3.1-mile out-and-back course in 16 minutes, 52 seconds.

Kelly, the Vero Beach High School cross country coach, improved on his second-place finish (17:53) in last year's race by more than a minute. Bryan Suarez of Okeechobee finished second in 17:33, and Jeremy Wynn of Vero Beach was third in 17:36. Fort Pierce's Tom Perona, 53, finished eighth overall to win the masters (age 40 and over) title in 18:45.

In the women's race, 15-year-old Vero Beach High School standout runner Lauren Lapointe won the overall title in 19:55, Lincoln Park Academy cross country coach Jamie Spooner of Port St. Lucie finished second in 20:57, and LPA runner Shelby Hitsman, 13, of Fort Pierce was third in 21:13. Cynthia Washam, 50, of Jensen Beach won the Masters title in 21:49.

A total of 277 runners and 55 walkers completed the event, which was in memory of Wayne Cross, a cross country and soccer coach at John Carroll High School and Lincoln Park Academy who passed away last year. Proceeds from the race will benefit a running path to be built in the north Fort Pierce area.
