John O’Connell of

pulled away the rest of the field in the final
150 yards to win the second annual Halpatiokee 5K Run held Saturday morning
at
Halpatiokee
Park
. O’Connell, 44, covered
the 3.1-mile loop course in 17 minutes, 44 seconds to finish eight seconds
ahead of Boca’s Dale Ruby. David Rhodes of Greenacres
finished third in

. Ruby, 41, won the
Masters (age 40 and over) title for his efforts.
In the women’s race, Pam Figoras of Jupiter was the lone runner to
break the 20-minute barrier as she clocked a

for the win. Brenda
Wilson, 46, of Stuart finished
second in 20:16
and
Jensen
Beach
’s Cynthia Washam was third in 22:08.
Wilson
won the Masters title.
A total of 102 runners completed the event, which was the first race
in the 15-race 2003-2004 Treasure Coast Grand Prix Race Series sponsored by
the
Martin
County
Parks
and Recreation Department and hosted by the
Sailfish Striders Running Club of Stuart. The next race
in the Series will be the Run The Roosevelt 5K Run in downtown Stuart on
Saturday, September 13th, starting at
7:00 a.m.
