STUART - Bob Haviland of Jensen Beach ran away from the rest
of the field to win the inaugural Halpatiokee 5K Run/Walk held Sunday
morning at Halpatiokee Regional Park as part of the park’s grand opening
festivities. Haviland, 35, led from start to finish and covered the 3.1-mile
looping cross-country course in 18 minutes, 34 seconds, followed by Coconut
Grove’s Charlie Galloway in 19:09 and Austin Boyle of Vero Beach in 19:15.
Galloway, 53, won the Masters (age 40 and over) title for his efforts.
In the women’s race, Brenda Wilson of Stuart won the Overall title
in 22:21, Fort Pierce’s Kathleen Kiper was second in 23:03, and 14-year-old
Shannon Barry of Palm City finished third in 23:33. Taryn Kryzda, 45, of
Palm City won the Masters title with a time of 26:54.
A total of 91 runners and two walkers completed the race, which was
the first event in the 16-race 2002-2003 Treasure Coast Grand Prix (TCGP)
Race Series. The TCGP Race Series is sponsored by the Martin County Parks
and Recreation Department and hosted by the Sailfish Striders Running Club
of Stuart. The next event in the Series is the Run The Roosevelt 5K Run,
which will be held at 7:00 am in downtown Stuart on September 21st.
