Holassie wins Calle Ocho event; Persson leads women

Two-time Olympian Ronnie Holassie is nearly back to his old self in running.

It's taken Holassie, 33, of Miramar, longer than he expected to get back to running fast times and dominating the South Florida racing scene, which he has done for more than a decade.

A series of injuries and illnesses sidelined him for almost a year.

But late Friday, Holassie was encouraged with his victory at the Publix Carnaval Miami 8K Run on Calle Ocho in Little Havana. The race had more than 900 participants.

Holassie topped a strong men's open field to win the men's title in 24 minutes and 56 seconds. He averaged 5:01-minute miles.

It was a Broward County sweep as Marlene Persson, 34, of Deerfield Beach, won the women's race in 30:44. She averaged 6:11-minute miles.
