Holassie first in return to racing

By Sharon Robb

Posted October 3 2005

DEEERFIELD BEACH · Ronnie Holassie and Sara Darling-Norgeot got reacquainted with racing Sunday at the ninth annual Dunn's Run.

After missing the entire summer of racing with a back injury, Holassie, 34, of Miramar, won the men's race in 25 minutes and 34 seconds for five miles. Holassie, a two-time Olympian for Trinidad and Tobago and now a U.S. citizen, led the entire race.

"I want to make another serious push with my running and I am looking to do a marathon," Holassie said.

Darling-Norgeot, 25, of Boca Raton, an assistant coach at her alma mater, Spanish River High, where she was a state champion in cross country and track, won the women's race in her 5-mile debut in 33:52.

Her last "fun" race was the ING Miami Marathon last January. She last ran competitively 51/2 years ago.

"I forgot how much fun this was," said Darling-Norgeot.

Elite wheelchair racer Renzo Martinez of Boca Raton defended his title in 24:50 despite wind gusts up to 25 mph.

The season opener for road racing had 789 runners and walkers.
